Dippy Returns: The Nation's Favourite Dinosaur

Natural History Museum

Dippy was the first Diplodocus to be displayed anywhere in the world.  Gifted to the Natural History in 1905 it became iconic, drawing millions of visitors until 2017 when it went on a 4 year tour of the UK.

Returning to the Natural History museum this summer, Dippy is being displayed alongside exhibits exploring the environment and wildlife of the UK.

Beam were appointed by the museum to create a vivid interactive display combining the wrap around video work of Street Films with a beautifully composed sound scape by Sean Lee.

We worked with the estates team and Setworks to light the huge cast with the original lighting track being removed to accommodate Dippy in the space. We designed the rig to be fully flexible and emulate the video as it explores the rich, dynamic environments of the UK. From forests, to shorelines and cities the lighting states allow visitors to imagine this huge creature roaming the Earth over 150 million years ago.
